There are a number of first aid certificates and qualifications in the U.K. and an even greater number worldwide.

 

Below are the abbreviations we have listed at this time, however more may be added at a later stage. If your qualification is not listed just choose ‘other’ and enter your remaining details.  You will receive an email near the expiry date of your certificate to remind you to book onto a refresher course.

 

EMPLOYERS

FAW— FIRST AID AT WORK. You will either have done a four-day initial course approved by the H.S.E. or a two-day refresher course and both have an assessment at the end.  Certificates are valid for 3-years and should be renewed before expiry.

AP— APPOINTED PERSON. You will have done a one-day (or in some cases 4-hour) course for low risk working environments.  Some organizations validate these certificates for 3 years others for 1 or 2 years.

EAS— EMERGENCY AID SESSION. Not all companies use this term but it reflects a 3 or 4 –hour course. Some organizations validate these certificates for 3 years others for 1 or 2 years.

PUB—PUBLIC FIRST AID. This is a course usually done at night school or weekends and covers first aid in the home and leisure etc but NOT valid for First Aid at Work.  You will have been assessed and passed the assessment, valid usually for 3 years.

PAEDIATRIC—This course is for child minders or anybody who looks after young children.  You will have done a course lasting 12 hours either evenings, weekends or as a two-day course.

RYA This is the ROYAL YACHTING ASSOCIATION first aid certificate valid for three years.

BCU The BRITISH CANOE UNION certificate valid for three years.

RLSSThe ROYAL LIFE SAVING SOCIETY—valid for three years.

DEFIB—This is an AUTOMATIC EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATORS OPERATORS course and the certificate can be valid from anything from 3 months to 3 years depending on the company and the duration of the course

OTHER—This is any other kind of certificate not mentioned above.  Your reminder will say that your “UNSPECIFIED” first aid certificate is due to expire on etc.
